Nigeria successfully hosted the inaugural CISM Military Beach Wrestling Challenge in Abuja from 8 to 12 September 2026, bringing together military athletes from Algeria, Iran, Mali, Nigeria, Russia and Tunisia.
The event represented an important milestone for military sport in Africa, with four of the six participating nations—Algeria, Mali, Nigeria and Tunisia—representing the continent. Their participation demonstrated Africa’s growing presence in Beach Wrestling and its capacity to host high-level international military sporting events.
African wrestlers delivered strong performances throughout the men’s competition. Algeria achieved podium finishes in every weight category, placing third overall in the men’s standings with 65 points. Host nation Nigeria finished fourth with 60 points and was represented in all four men’s categories, while Tunisia earned a notable silver medal in the 90 kg division through Issa Rhimi. Mali also contributed to the diverse and competitive character of the inaugural event.
Nigeria’s role extended beyond hosting. Nigerian women took part in demonstration matches, creating an encouraging first platform for women’s military Beach Wrestling and laying the groundwork for broader international participation in future editions. The event also included an International Referee Course and anti-doping training and certification for local Doping Control Officers and chaperones, leaving valuable technical expertise in the host country.
By welcoming delegations from Africa, Asia and Europe, Nigeria showcased the unifying power of military sport and CISM’s “Friendship through Sport” mission. The successful Challenge provides a promising foundation for the continued growth of Beach Wrestling across Africa and within the global CISM programme.
