The OSMA Sahel Games for Peace and Solidarity officially commenced on 10th October 2021 with a grand opening ceremony in Abuja. The event brought together military delegations from across the Sahel region in a powerful celebration of unity, resilience, and cooperation.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of the Chief of Defence Staff of the Nigerian Armed Forces, the official sponsor of the Games, as well as the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, the Grand Patron, alongside numerous high-ranking civil and military officials.
In his opening address, the OSMA President warmly welcomed all participating delegations and highlighted that the Games form part of OSMA’s broader development strategy aimed at strengthening its activities and impact across the continent. In his remarks, the Chief of Defence Staff underscored the significance of this major sporting gathering, noting that it provides a vital platform for countries of the Sahel region to promote friendship, mutual understanding, and solidarity in the face of shared challenges.
He further emphasized the essential role of sport and physical fitness in building disciplined and combat-ready armed forces, while commending participating nations for their strong turnout despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The ceremony was further enlivened by a vibrant display of acrobatic performances and cultural dances, creating a memorable and inspiring atmosphere that marked the successful launch of the Games.
